Benefits of being involved in a student club/organization

We have over 350 student clubs and organizations that represent a huge range of areas- academic, religious, cultural, political, arts, athletic, social, and many more. We encourage you to support your student getting involved and finding a meaningful connection on campus.

Students tell us that some of the benefits they gained from their involvement are:

  • Building skills like public speaking, organization, and leadership
  • Assisting them in discovering their professional interests
  • Getting to know one's self and strengths
  • Connecting to their heritage
  • An opportunity to give back to the community
  • Networking with students, faculty, staff, and alumni
  • Feeling like a part of the Cal Poly family
  • Helping them persist in their academic program

Hazing

Hazing is difficult to define because it covers a wide range of conduct, from the obviously serious to the seemingly innocuous. There is no single definition, and state laws differ. Hazing has also been defined as "any activity expected of someone joining a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers, regardless of the participants willingness to participate". If an individual or group has a complaint against a recognized Cal Poly student organization, they can file a formal complaint through ASI Club Services. The complaint will be routed to the Judicial Panel and University Police may be involved if there is an immediate need.

Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages are not to be served at off-campus functions by officially Chartered Cal Poly student organizations except when private service (i.e., for members and guests) is arranged by contract with a properly licensed third party vendor. A written copy of the contract must be on file with ASI Club Services prior to the approval of the event.
